Description
This is an image of a female common redpoll, a member of the finch family, taken in the backyard. Most years, we get a small flock of these guys coming to the feeders in the winter. Thistle and sunflower seeds are their favorite foods at the feeders. They have been hammering the thistle socks this winter! They come from the far north, the boreal and taiga regions.
They are an extremely hardy bird. They can withstand very cold temperatures. I read somewhere that scientists have put them in a freezer to see how much cold they can take before freezing to death. Sounds very cruel to me. Maybe they should put the scientists in the freezer!

Absolutely a wondrous capture, Gerry! I love your background, which accentuates the needled branch, with red berries, and the glorious in flight capture of this beautiful finch about to land. Very fine piece of art work, Gerry! Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful image, Gerry! My consolation regarding the horrible scientists is, "what goes around comes around".

Amazing shot! The red on the head and the red berries add such a great touch. (Love your "scientists in the freezer" remark - I agree wholeheartedly).

Great shot, I never seen this bird in our area.

Thank you, Yumi! It's possible you might be a bit far south to see these guys. I'm not sure what their southern range is.
