Description
This image was taken at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Minnesota. Contrary to what most people believe, the bears at this Sanctuary are wild and are free to come and go as they please. These two cubs were given some kind of verbal clue by their mother to climb this tree while she left. They were very anxious for Mom to come back. They would bawl, very much like a human baby would. It's very entertaining to observe this. They did not come down until she came back. The boars, or male bears, will kill the cubs if they can. That is why Mom sent them up this tree. I have seen many confrontations over the years between much smaller moms or sows and large boars. The moms have never backed down and the males end up leaving the area. Some of the black bear males or boars can weigh 600-700 pounds, although they are usually smaller than that.
