Gerry, I recognized the red eyes from my photograph of a Cooper's Hawk posted on FAA. It could also be a Sharp Shinned Hawk, as the mature adults of both have red eyes, grey-brown back, and a rusty-colored breast. The Cooper's is larger, about the size of a crow, while the Sharp Shinned is about the size of a dove. I'm no raptor expert, so consider this a guess! Cheers, Amy

Gerry Sibell replied:

Thanks, Amy! I'm certainly no birder, especially with raptors! The consensus right now is it's an adult sharp shinned. It certainly looks like it by the images on Google. Thanks for helping out.

Artist's Description

This is an image of an adult sharp shinned hawk. Thanks for the ID from Rick Wright. This was taken at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Minnesota. He had been hanging around hunting, one time in a tree and another time landed on the observation deck just a few feet away from the photographers.

About Gerry Sibell

Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography!
