Artist's Description

This is an early morning image of a greater prairie chicken. Once abundant, these birds have become quite scarce and in some places gone. They need to have short grass to do their dance. Conservation agencies are working hard to replace the habitat for these beautiful birds. The lek or "booming grounds" are where the chickens do their dance. Very fascinating!

This is the first time I have been able to watch these amazing birds do their mating rituals. To do this, a person has to be in the blind at least an hour before sunrise so the birds aren't scared off. For me, this was getting out of bed at 3:45 AM. Not something I want to make a habit of!

However, it was an extremely fun and interesting time watching these birds "do their thing"!

About Gerry Sibell

Gerry Sibell

Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography!
