Description
This is an image of a blue jay landing on a goldenrod gall taken in the backyard. From what I've read, the goldenrod gall flys lay the larvae on the goldenrod. The larvae take up residence in the gall. Downy woodpeckers, along with chickadees, will try to get the larvae out of the gall. The woodpeckers beaks are better suited for this task than the chickadees' beaks. I remember when growing up, we would use the goldenrod larvae as bait when fishing for sunfish. Birds are so amazing in how they can adapt in order to survive!
