Artist's Description
This image was taken at the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota. Grizzer and Maya are brother and sister. Grizzer succeeded Shadow as the alpha but he wasn't aggressive enough to keep that status. Denali, a younger wolf, gained confidence when Grizzer didn't come down hard enough on him. Grizzer ended up getting hurt and was separated from the younger wolves. Maya had to be euthanized because of injuries suffered in one of the skirmishes. Someday, both Grizzer and Maya will be in wolf heaven howling at the moon together.
About Gerry Sibell
Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography! Wonderful image of my favorite Ambassador wolves. Maya was a very special wolf and we miss her. So happy Grizzer is doing well in retirement.
Gerry Sibell replied:
Thank you, Barb! Maya was the "fisherwolf" and the raven hunter! I have a hard time going back up there to photograph since Maya is gone and Grizzer is out of sight. I would spend hours watching Grizzer. I miss those two wolves!
Lavie Nenharma
I love Girzzer; he is amazing. I love the focus in this; how the wolf in the foreground is slightly clearer than the wolf in the background.
Gerry Sibell replied:
Thank you, Lavie! Grizzer and Maya were the greatest. I wish a person could still photograph Grizzer. He was sooo majestic. His downfall was he was too tolerant of the youngsters and they took advantage of him.
