Description
This is an image of a brown or cinnamon colored wild black bear taken at Vince Shute in Orr, Minnesota. I particularly like the rim lighting on this little guy.
According to the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota, different color phases of black bears are more common west of the Mississippi River. Since we're on either side of this river, different colors of the black bear are found here. The eastern United States black bears are predominately black.
When we visit Yellowstone, there are a lot of brown and cinnamon colored black bears. Because of the high temperatures out west, the lighter colors help to keep these animals a bit cooler. Visitors in Yellowstone often see a brown or cinnamon colored bear and exclaim "grizzly", even though it's a black bear. They fail to look for the telltale hump and the different face which is found on the grizzlies. I've given up trying to tell them it's a black bear. The same is true out there when people think a coyote is a wolf. They want it to be a wolf, so it is going to be one!
