Description
This is an image of what appears to be a female pine grosbeak taken in the backyard in northern Minnesota. In their first year, young males can look like the females. There is some red on the wings and tail feathers, so it might be a male. Most winters, these beautiful birds show up to decimate the sunflower seeds with their large, powerful beaks. According to Cornell, pine grosbeaks are the largest and the rarest of the finch family.
