Artist's Description

This is an image of a COY (cub of the year) taken in August at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Minnesota. The black bears at Shute's are wild and are free to come and go as they please. I saw these same cubs in June and they have dramatically increased their size and weight. They are now in what is called hyperphagia mode in northern Minnesota. They seem to eat everything in sight to get ready for the long period of hibernation. They do hibernate but their body temperature does not drop dramatically and they also do not urinate or defecate during that time. Also, they do not drink or eat during that time. I have read where they will consume upwards of 20,000 calories a day, which is equivalent to 20 MacDonalds cheeseburgers! This little guy was a particularly handsome bear and was waiting for his mother to return. He was close to a tree to climb in case of danger, like the arrival of a boar or male bear. Boars are known to kill cubs.

About Gerry Sibell

Gerry Sibell

Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography!
