Artist's Description

This image was taken at the International Wolf Center in Ely, Minnesota. It's amazing to see how big the wolves' mouths and paws are when you can see them close up. This is an image of Maya. Maya and her brother, Grizzer, are easy to tell apart when together. Grizzer is quite a bit larger and Maya has more brown on her fur. It's a bit harder on close up shots like this. Update: Maya had to be euthanized this winter because of injuries received during one of the fights for the alpha status between her brother and Denali. Denali and Aidan are the two younger wolves in the pack. Grizzer received serious head injuries and was put in the retirement area so his injuries can heal. He won't be put back in the main enclosure. Maya loved to "fish" for the minnows that were put in the pond during the summer months. She was a good wolf and I'll miss her.

About Gerry Sibell

Gerry Sibell

Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography!
