Artist's Description

An image of a male hooded merganser taken in northern Minnesota. I had a fun time yesterday watching this guy get more and more impatient for his mate to lay an egg and get out of the nest box! His call sounds like, "maag wah. The longer she sat in there, the more he kept giving his call. One year, he actually flew up to the box and looked in. My wife was watching the hen in the box because there is a camera in there and she can watch it on the television in the house.

Every time the male did his call, the hen would move one or two pieces of cedar shavings, almost like she could say she was busy doing something!! Then she would close her eyes and take a nap! Finally, the male had enough and took off. It wasn't long after the female decided she had played this out long enough, covered up the eggs, and took off after her mate. Fun to see!

About Gerry Sibell

Gerry Sibell

Thanks for stopping by. A retired educator, my main focus since retirement has been becoming more serious about photography. My wife and I live in northern Minnesota. Our favorite place to visit and photograph is Yellowstone National Park. My project for the past ten years has been photographing small birds in flight. The most frustrating endeavor I have ever attempted but also the most rewarding. Each day, it seems like a new problem has to be solved with this very difficult kind of photography!
