Description
This is an image taken at Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Mn. These are wild black bears free to come and go as they please. There is quite a story concerning Bruno. This past winter, a logger was falling trees in Minnesota when a tree hit a den that he didn't know was there. The mother ran off and didn't come back. The logger waited and then took the cub to a rehab center. The MN DNR was contacted and asked if they could do something. Usually, in these situations, the cub has to be euthanized because it won't survive by itself. The DNR decided to put the cub in with a mother hibernating who had four other cubs. Voila! It worked!
My workshop leader this spring, Eric Tetens, had the rare privilege of being there when this happened. He said it was a wonderful experience.
The mother is known as Ginger. The DNR put tags on both Ginger and Bruno, to help identify them to see how successful this been.
If this little guy doesn't just melt your heart, there is no hope for you!!
Here is a video from Shutes showing the DNR getting Bruno to learn how to nurse while the stepmom, Ginger was still in hibernation.
