Description
This is an image of a black bear COY (cub of the year) taken at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary in Orr, Minnesota. These bears are wild and are free to come and go as they please.
This cub and his three siblings went up in the trees because of a verbal cue from the mother. A boar or male bear was in the vicinity. Boars will kill cubs. The mother was much smaller than the intruder but she stood up to him. He decided discretion was the better part of valor and moved on. The huffing and puffing on the part of the mothers makes for a very interesting experience. I never fail to marvel at how brave the sows or females are and the lengths they will go to protect their cubs.
