Description
This is an image of a Bohemian waxwing taken in the backyard in northern Minnesota. The Bohemians are the nomads of the bird world, always on the move. They have been showing up several times a day to feed on last year's apples. The long lines in the photo are from the raindrops.
These "gypsies" will start back to their breeding grounds soon. They feed primarily on fruits and some insects. I have read they have oversized livers to be able to handle the large sugar content of the fermented fruits they consume. Even then, they can become drunk and sometimes die. After the Bohemians have left we will start seeing their cousins, the cedar waxwings, once the blossoms on the fruit trees start popping up here. Waxwings are about the most beautiful birds we see in the yard.
